Lumberton volleyball defeats E.E. Smith

With an enthusiastic crowd on hand for seniors' night, the Lumberton girls varsity volleyball team put on a wonderful show in defeating Fayetteville's E.E. Smith 3-0. The four seniors, Caroline Prine, Safiya Ghaffar, Sharon McMillan (shown in photo on left), and Tori Bellon, were honored before the game for their tremendous contribution to the Lumberton Pirates volleyball program. Conference tournament play begins on Monday.

Cape Fear edges Lumberton volleyball

Using the home crowd to their advantage, Cape Fear came from behind to defeat the Lumberton girls varsity volleball team 2-1 on Tuesday night in Fayetteville. With one more regular-season matchup remaining against E.E. Smith on Thursday, Head Coach Hannah Hayes will soon begin preparing for next week's tournament action. Lumberton's Jennifer Prince is shown in the photo on left during play against Cape Fear.

Lumberton soccer makes good showing

Both the varsity and junior varsity Lumberton soccer teams made good showings on Monday night against powerful Terry Sanford, currently ranked as one of the top teams in the state. Terry Sanford defeated the Lumberton junior varsity team 1-0 in the opening game of the evening, while the Lumberton varsity team dropped their game by a score of 3-1. Chris Prevatte scored Lumberton's goal with 3:46 remaining in the contest. The photo, on left, of Lumberton's Evander Britt (35) was taken during the junior varsity game.

Purnell Swett defeats Lumberton 27-7

Purnell Swett running back Marlin Locklear rushed for 198 yards as his team knocked off Lumberton 27-7. Locklear scored on a 20-yard run, Patrick McCartney scored on 1-yard run, and Jordan Jones scored on a 4-yard run. In addition, McCartney and Sanders Fairley teamed up on a 63-yard touchdown pass for Purnell Swett. Lumberton's touchdown came on 90-yard kickoff return by Stargell Love in the 4th quarter. The rugged Purnell Swett defense held Lumberton to 35 yards total offense.

Purnell Swett comeback falls short

The Purnell Swett football team battled back from a 21-6 deficit, but fell short by one touchdown as South View remained undefeated with a 21-14 victory. Nigel Bryant intercepted three passes for South View to cut short several Purnell Swett offensive drives.
